Will 5G replace WIFI?
With the development of technology, the era of 5G is getting closer to our daliy life. In teh MWC 2019, the 2019 mobile economy report released by GSMA predicts that at least 18 countries will have commercial 5G networks by the end of this year.
At the same time as the MWC, us carrier Verizon announced plans to launch 5G home Internet in more than 30 us cities in the first half of 2019, and the area of 5G home Internet promotion will continue to expand in the second half of 2019. Notably, Verizon's 5G home Internet service has no data traffic limits and gives away three months 'worth of Youtube mebership.
In the era of 5G, against the background of plummeting mobile data charges, the use scenario of devices connected through 5G network will become a reality in families. In this context, whether the WIFI - based wireless local area network will exit the stage of history has become a major focus of public discussion. Many people believe that the advantage of WIFI for families lies in the unlimited traffic, so once 5G network data enters the stage of unlimited, WIFI is likely to be replaced by 5G.
However, replacing WIFI with 5G is a false proposition because 5G and WIFI are not the same thing. 5G refers to the fifth generation of standards for wireless access networks, which are characterized by millimeter wavelength, ultra-broadband, ultra-high speed and ultra-low latency. WIFI is a wireless LAN protocol based on IEEE802.11 standard.
5G has the characteristics of low delay, high reliability and large concurrent access, so it has become the rational argument for 5G to replace WIFI. However, 5G USES millimeter-wave with weak penetration and rapid attenuation, while the main material of modern architecture is reinforced concrete with obvious signal blocking effect, so it is difficult for 5G to completely cover type content.
Therefore, 5G and WIFI are not competitive with each other, but complementary to each other. In the outdoor environment, the portability of mobile network makes 5G more flexible than WIFI. In the indoor environment, the penetration and privacy of WIFI make it more suitable for indoor use. Therefore, in the future when 5G network technology is popularized, WIFI will be used as a means to transform 5G network into LAN and connect indoor devices to 5G. That said, WIFI will be incorporated into the 5G architecture, not replaced.
It is worth noting that the advent of 5G era will not only bring about changes in WIFI. In fact, all devices in the family, including WIFI, will usher in a new trend. Home appliances, mobile phones and other devices need a new chip compatible with 5G network to catch the express train into the smart home. Also spawned new peripherals industry, such as slow to update specifically for smart products to 5 g network access to the connection device, or is equipped with 5 g chip TV box, can make it quick and easy access to 5 g iot era, become cheaper upgrade scheme, and form a new market.
